Festival Gets Under Way
CHERUTHURUTHY (KERALA), March 3: Nila National Dance and Music
Festival is currently on at Kalamandalam in Kerala. The festival
kick-started on March 1, 2008 at the Vallathol Nagar campus
and will last till March 4.
The festival is taking place at the Koothambalam (traditional
temple theatre) of Kalamandalam. The annual festival at this
venue usually attracts a huge number of music buffs from across
the country.
Danseuse Chitra Visweswaran inaugurated the function. An Odissi
dance by Arushi Mudgal took place on the opening day. This was
followed by a Carnatic vocal recital of Bombay Jayashri.
The organizers have drawn up an elaborate schedule consisting
of a Carnatic vocal recital by Vijay Siva, Hindustani music
by Padmashri Madhup Mudgal, Kuchipudi dance by Pallavi of Andhra
Pradesh, Bharatnatyam dance by Rama Vaidyanathan and Mohiniattam
by Gopika Verma, among others.
On the final day, a Kathakali dance by Kalamandalam Gopi is
being organized with the famous Kerala Kalamandalam artistes.
The festival also features Thayambaka (solo performance on the
Chenda) by Mattannoor Sriraj, percussion music led by the Maddalam
wizard Kunisserry Chandran, fusion music by talented artistes
in wind and percussion instruments, Kurumkuzhal and Nagaswara
concerts, folk music, Kalarippayatt (traditional martial art
of Kerala) etc.
Kalamandalam is situated along the Thrissur-Shoranur Highway.
The Shoranur railway station is three km from Vallathol Nagar
campus at Kalamandalam. The Kochi Airport is 80 km south off
Kalamandalam.
There are also enough boarding facilities at Cheruthuruthy village
and Shoranur town for the visitors to stay.
