Cleveland Aradhana Begins On March 22
CHENNAI, March 4: The annual Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana is
scheduled towards the Easter week-end. This year it falls between
March 22 and March 30. The yearly Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana
happens to be the largest Indian classical music festival in
North America. The Aradhana was first celebrated in 1978. It
has now grown into a week-long festival, attracting huge rasikas.
The leap year 2008 will see the 31st year of Aradhana at Cleveland.
All artistes will participate in the group-singing of the Pancharatna
kritis (five gems) of Saint Thyagaraja on March 22, 2008.
A book release function will also be held on March 22. Among
the books to be released are: A. Sundaresan's ``Rare Kritis
Of Trinity’’, Dr. Pappu Venugopal's ``Science Of
Sri Chakra’’, K.N. Shashikiran ``Learning Carnatic
Music Is Fun’’ and Dr. Ashok Madhav’s ``Melakartha
Ganamalika Compositions’’.
This will be followed by a violin concert of brother-sister
duo Lalgudi G.J.R. Krishnan and Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi. On the
same day, a thematic programme titled “Prahalada Bhakta
Vijayam” will be staged by the torch-bearers of Cleveland
Thyagaraja Aradhana family.
On March 23, `Golden Voice and Silken Strings,’ a music
recital, will be presented by R.K. Shrikantan and Prof. Sri
R.S. Ramakanth (vocal), N. Ravikiran (Chitravina) and Guruvayoor
Dorai and Babu (mridangam). On the same day, there will be a
vocal concert by Valson Menon.
Doyen and vainika Kalpagam Swaminathan will present a veena
concert on March 23 between 4.30 to 6.30 pm. She will be accompanied
by Vellore G. Ramabhadran on mridangam and Cleveland R. Balasubramaniam
on the kanjira. This concert will be followed by a special Bharatnatyam
dance featuring Roja Kannan, Radha and Nardhaki Natraj. Their
theme will be ‘Tradition of the Tanjore Quartet’.
There will be a lec-dem on March 24 by reputed danseuse Kalanidhi
Narayanan and Sudharani Raghupathy in the morning. Gayatri Venkatraghavan
will give a vocal concert at 4.30 pm. This will be followed
by a thematic rendering of the Kamalamba Navaavarana of Muthuswamy
Dikshitar by the Cleveland Aradhana family
March 25 will see vocal concerts by artistes M.S.Sheela, Salem
Sriram and Sikkil Gurucharan. There will be a Chitraveena concert
by N.Ravikiran in the evening.
On March 26, Neyveli Santanagopalan will give a vocal presentation.
On March 27, there will be a violin concert by Lalgudi Brahmanandam
and Anuradha Sriram. This will be followed by a vocal concert
by the Rudrapatnam brothers R.N. Thyagarajan and R.N. Tharanathan.
Reputed vocalists Sankari Krishnan, Carnatica Brothers K.N.
Shashikiran and P. Ganesh, O.S. Thiagarajan, Suguna Varadachari,
Madurai T.N. Seshagopalan and Vainika Jayalakshmi Sekhar will
give individual performances on March 28 and 29.
The Cleveland Aradhana will conclude on March 30 with ‘Margam’,
a journey by renowned dancers Kalanidhi Narayanan and Sudharani
Raghupathy with dancers from the Dance Workshop.
