CHENNAI, March 5: Legendary violinist and composer Lalgudi G.
Jayaraman will be conferred the "Special Life Time Achievement
Award" by the prestigious Music Academy, Madras, on the occasion
of its 80th year celebration on March 9, 2008 at 6.05 pm. The

T.T.K Road, Chennai. |

Mr. Gopalakrishna Gandhi, Governor of West Bengal, will preside over the function and give away the award to Lalgudi Jayaraman.
Lalgudi Jayaraman was closely associated with all-time greats
like Mudicondan Venkatarama Iyer, Musiri Subramanium, Ariyakudi
Ramanuja Iyengar, Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, Madurai Mani Iyer,
G.N. Balasubramaniam, Alathoor brothers and others. As an accompanist,
he always left an indelible stamp with his brilliant artistic
acumen, shrewdly anticipating the musical thoughts of the center-stage
performer and yet keeping in control the temptation to steal
a march over the main artiste. That is what concert ethics are
all about.
Apart from being an outstanding violinist, he has composed many
tillanas and varnams. Among the varnams he composed are: Chalamalu
(Valaji), Deviun (Devagandhari) and Kannanin (Huseni). He has
composed tana varna “Senthil”(Neelambari) in Telugu.
At the request of Rajashree Sankaran, this varnam was composed
as a Pada varnam in Tamil. He has also composed a varnam `Innam’
(Charukesi) for Kumari Kamala, the famed film actress and dancer.
He has also composed for danseuse Chitra Visweswaran “Devar
Munivar” (Shanmukhapriya) and a Navarasa varnam in Ragamalika.
Navarasa varnam is the first one composed by the maestro, expressing
the Navaras (nine rasas). Tillanas of Lalgudi have brand of
their own and presented by many artistes during concerts. His
disciples such as Bombay Jayashri, Sankari Krishnan, S.P. Ramh,
among, others have popularized these during the December season.
There are no frontline dancers who give a performance sans a
lalgudi tillana. He has composed on various ragas such as Yamuna
Kalyani, Brindavani, Bimplas and Vasanti. His first tillana
composition was in Rag Vasantha at the age of 26 in 1956. He
has also composed a thillana for Jaya Jaya Devi, the dance Ballet.
In this thillana, the aspects of lasya and tandavam, the feminine
and masculine forms of dance, are brought forth with great finesse
and clarity. He has composed the suladi sapta tala, sapta raga,
sapta khanda Ramayana for the dancer Chitra Vishweshwaran. Lalgudi
has also made a mark as a guru in training students, both in
vocal and violin. Many of his disciples have now grown on to
become frontline performers themselves.
