Vidya Mandir Students Perform At Sundaram Finance Sunday Kutcheri In Park

By Sudha Jagannathan

CHENNAI, March 7: Fifteen students, aged between 11 years and 14 years, from Vidya Mandir School, Mylapore in Chennai, presented a vocal music performance for an hour from 6.30 am on March 2 at the monthly mike-less ‘Sundaram Finance Sunday Kutcheri in the Park’ at the Nageswara Rao Park in Mylapore.

These children were accompanied by Shyam on the Violin, Shrikrishna and R. Varun on the Mridangam and by S. Krishna on the Ghatam.

Their rendition of Vaataapi Ganapathim, Sobillu Sapthaswara, Kalyana Gopalam and Niraimadhi drew applause from the audience.

The objective of this monthly Sundaram Finance Sunday Kutcheri in the Park, which was started in February 2006, is to provide a launch pad for budding artistes under15 years of age to showcase their musical talents and encourage them to perform without inhibition in an open air environment.

No mikes and speakers are used at the Sunday Kutcheri in the Park. Sundaram Finance’s audition committee conducts an audition to finalize the artistes.

In a release, T. T. Srinivasaraghavan, Managing Director, Sundaram Finance Ltd., said, “Over the last month, we have received a number of enquiries from schools in Chennai to participate in the Sundaram Finance Sunday Kutcheri in the Park. This kutcheri by 15 children from Vidya Mandir, Mylapore received an overwhelming response with the students performing to a packed audience gathered all around the stage.”

Mr. Srinivasaraghavan was pleased especially because these students, who were learning music individually from different music teachers and had different music styles, had been brought together and trained for the Sunday Kutcheri by Mrs. Harikripa Kannan, the Math teacher of Vidya Mandir.

“The objective of the Sunday Kutcheri in the Park is to provide opportunities for young musical talent aged under 15 years to perform in an open air environment without speakers and mikes. We encourage more schools to come forward and participate in the Kutcheri,” he added.

“The early morning park ambience was very pleasant and conducive for a kutcheri. The mike-less kutcheri is an interesting and innovative concept. The children were very surprised when they were told that there would be no mikes and speakers but they enjoyed their first ever experience of a mike-less open air kutcheri,” the release quoted Mrs. Harikripa Kannan as saying.

Mr. Srinivasaraghavan also presented certificates to the performing artistes.

Interested children can contact 94440 – 40748 for audition and registration details.
