Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva
Puraskar Award for Sikkil Gurucharan
CHENNAI, March 14: Upcoming artistes Sikkil C. Gurucharan (vocalist),
Akkarai S. Subbulakshmi (violin) and Peravali Jaya Bhaskar (mridangam)
are among the 30 young artistes chosen for the Ustad Bismillah
Khan Yuva Puraskar 2007.
The General Council of Sangeet Natak Akademi, the National Academy
of Music, Dance and Drama, an autonomous body of Government
of India and the apex institution of performing arts in the
country, at its meeting held recently picked 30 young artists
of India who have made a mark in their respective fields of
performing arts for the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar 2007.

The Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar
is meant for young artists below the age of 35 years (as on
1st April of the year) and covers music, dance, theatre, puppetry
and scholarships in performing arts.
The Sangeet Natak Akademi introduced the award for young artists
in the name of Ustad Bismillah Khan, Bharat Ratna and Fellow
of the Akademi, from 2006 with the objective of identifying
and encouraging outstanding young talents in diverse fields
of performing arts and give them national recognition early
in life so that they may work with greater commitment and dedication
in their chosen fields.
In the field of music, eight young artists for Hindustani, Carnatic
and other major traditions of music have been selected. In the
field of dance, eight young artists have been selected for Bharatanatyam,
Kathak, Kathakali, Manipuri, Odissi, Kuchipudi, Mohiniattam
and Music for Dance. In the field of theatre, eight young artists
have been selected for acting, direction and lighting. For their
talents in different forms of traditional/folk/tribal arts,
six artistes from various parts of the country have been selected.
The Yuva Puraskar carries a purse money of Rs.25,000, says a
release.
