Chennai to host memorial concert for konnakol T H Subash Chandran

A memorial concert for legendary konnakol vidwan T. H .Subash Chandran is being organised in Chennai on the evening of April 24.
The concert will feature Grammy Award winners Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and Sangeetha Kalanidhi Chitravina Ravikiran and others.
The concert is being held at the “Vani Mahal” auditorium.
“Vidwan Subash Chandran is one of the greatest gurus in our times, trained hundreds of students in the Carnatic classical music percussion and taught multiple percussion instruments in India and around the world. His untimely passing away during these pandemic times was a great loss to the musical fraternity, in general, and aspiring music students, in particular,” said a release.
“To continue his legacy in Indian classical music, we have organised this first tribute function. It will be attended by many musical stalwarts, performing disciples and music lovers,” said Ganesh Kumar, a Kanjira artist, who is organising the concert.
Subash Chandran died in June 2020 at the age of 74. Subash Chandran hailed from a family of percussionists and was the recipient of many awards and titles, including Asthana Vidwan of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam. He was the younger brother of “Vikku” Vinayakram. Subash Chandran was a multi-percussionist. He was quite adept in percussion instruments such as mridangam, ghatam, kanjira, morsingh and konnakol.
Subash Chandran had also performed with all-time greats such as Yehudi Menuhin, Stephen Grapheli, Tony Williams and Max Roach. He had also performed along with Indian greats such as M S Subbulakshmi, Balamurali krishna, U Shrinivas and Dr L Subramaniam, among others.
