Carnatic vocalists C. Lalitha and C. Saroja have been chosen for the prestigious Padma Shri award by the Centre.
Known popularly as Bombay sisters, Saroja and Lalitha came to Chennai when they were just out of their teenage years. They came to Chennai on a Government of India scholarship, and joined the Central College of Music, where Govinda Rao was teaching. They learnt under him for nearly five decades.
Nagaswaram vidwans, Sheik Mahaboob Subhani and his wife Kaleeshabi Mahaboob, who hail from Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh and have settled in Srirangam, too, have been chosen for the Padma Shri award. “We hail from a long line of musicians, who played the Chilakluripet Paani. We are the 8th generation, and our son Sheik Ferose Babu is the ninth in that line. We consider this award a recognition for our lineage,” English daily The Hindu quoted Mr. Mahaboob Subhani as saying.
