The 96th annual conference and concerts of The Music Academy will get under way in Chennai on December 15, 2022.
It will be inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr. M. K. Stalin, who will be the chief guest.
The annual event of the Academy is being held after a hiatus of two years. The annual events could not be held since the government had announced lock-down and restrictions in the wake of escalating Covid-19.
The Academy could announce the names of Sangita Kalanidhi awardees only this year. The awardees are:
2020 – Neyveli Sri R Santhanagopalan
2021 – Thiruvarur Sri Bhaktavatsalam
2022 – Lalgudi Sri GJR Krishnan & Vijayalakshmi
As has been the practice, Sangita Kalanidhi-designates will preside over the morning conference sessions.
Chairman of Tata Sons, N. Chandresekeran, will preside over the Sadas, which will be held on the evening of January 1, 2023.
The Academy has announced the list of performers at the annual event. Senior vocalists Bombay Jayashri, Nithyasree Mahadevan and Aruna Sairam aren’t giving concerts for the Academy this time around, it appears. Vocalist T. M. Krishna, of course, has chosen not to participate in the December concerts in Chennai. The annual music event will kick-start with a violin duet on the evening of December 15 by Akkarai Sisters – S.Subhalakshmi and S. Sornalatha.
The annual music event will conclude on January 1 with a special programme featuring a violin duet by Sangita Kalanidhi M.Chandrasekharan & G.Bharathi. They will be accompanied by Umayalpuram Mali (Mridangam) Sukanya Ramgopal (Ghatam).
This time around, many youngsters have been pushed up to the senior slots.
