A sad moment, says Sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan
'It is indeed a very sad moment for the world of Indian classical music to have lost one of its great representatives, Smt. Gangubai Hangal. I have shared some memorable moments with Gangubai Hangal during music festivals right from the seventies. She carried with her an era of the old world charm of the music world and the great legacy of Ustad Abdul Kareem Khan and Sawai Gandharva. She had the most appealing and powerful voice was endeared by music lovers all over the country.
I was very fortunate to have had the opportunity to honour her with the Haafiz Ali Khan Award in Mumbai in 1990, ironically with D. K. Pattamal, the great singer from South India who also passed away a week back. It's sad that with the passing away of these luminaries, these seats of the classical world have become vacant forever now. I pray to almighty that may her soul rest in peace and may she continue to live forever through her music and her disciples.'
