Padma Vibhushan for Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman
NEW DELHI, January 25: Senior mridangist from Tamil Nadu Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman has been chosen for the prestigious Padma Vibhushan award.

The Padma Awards 2010 were announced today. Padma Awards, the country’s highest civilian awards, are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.The Padma Awards are given for exceptional and distinguished service in any field including service rendered by Government servants. This year, the President has approved 130 awards, including 13 in the category of foreigners/ NRIs/ PIOs. These comprise 6 Padma Vibhushan, 43 Padma Bhushan and 81 Padma Shri awards

Padma Vibhushan:
Theatre director Ebrahim Alkazi (Delhi), theatre actor Zohra Segal (Delhi) and percussionist and mridangam vidwan Umayalpuram K Sivaraman (Chennai).

Padma Bhushan:
Kathak guru Kumudhini Lakhia (Ahmedabad), dancer Mallika Sarabhai (Ahmedabad), Hindustan classical vocalist Pt Chhannulal Mishra (Uttar Pradesh), percussion acharya Kuzhur Narayana Marar (Kerala) and Prof. (Dr.) Nookala Chinna Satyanarayana (Andhra Pradesh).

Padma Shri:
Odissi guru Mayadhar Raut (Delhi), Little Ballet Troupe's Gul Bardhan (Madhya Pradesh), Manipuri dancer Haobam Ongbi Ngangbi Devi (Manipur ), musician Pandit Raghunath Panigrahi (Orissa), Ram Dayal Munda for tribal music and dance (Jharkhand), theatre person Arundati Nag (Karnataka), President of Bharat Kalachar Mrs.Y.G. Parthasarathy (Chennai).
