Musician S. Rajam is no more
CHENNAI, January 30: Senior musician S. Rajam died here on Friday. He was 91. He is survived by two sons and two daughters. Rajam was the elder brother of late S. Balachandar, renowned veena player. Musician, teacher and an artiste, Rajam popularised the compositions of Koteeswara Iyer, who composed a song in each of 72 ‘melakartha ragas.’ He also popularised kshetra keerthanas. A recipient of Sangeetha Nataka Academy award, he was also conferred the Sangita Kalaacharya Award by the Music Academy. He had acted in three films - as Rama in `Seetha Kalyanam' (1934), as Krishna in `Radha Kalyanam' (1935) and again as Krishna in `Rukmini Kalyanam' (1936). Rajam was also a talented painter and photographer.
