Sangeetha Guru Sironmani Award for B.Umashankar
CHENNAI, July 15: Vocalist Shri B.Umashankar will be conferred the Sangeetha Guru Sironmani Award by Sukhi Nikhetan Arts Academy, an institution founded by Carnatic musician Hyderabad Siva.

The award will be given away at a function on July 17. The function is being organized in connection with Guru Poornima celebrations. It will be presided over by Dr. Rukmani Ramani, a senior Carnatic musician and daughter of Papanasam Sivan, a great composer. The function will be held at 10 a.m. at Singaram Pillai School, Damodaran Lane, Villivakkam.

Shri Umashankar is chosen for the award for his contributions to the cause of Carnatic music both as a performing artiste and also teacher. ``I dedicate this honour to the lotus feet of my guru Needamangalam lateV.V. Subramaniam and Bombay Sisters Smt. C. Saroja Smt. C. Lalitha, says Shri Umashankar.

Shri Umashankar hails from a family of musicians. He was born on April 29, 1974. He learnt music under the tutelage of Sangeetha Vidwan Needamangalam lateV.V. Subramania Iyer and Bombay sisters (Smt. C. Saroja and Smt. C. Lalitha). He is a performer, teacher, composer, music director, publisher and also an organizer of music programmes.

He holds a bachelor degree in Commerce (B.Com.), higher grade diploma in Indian music and a masters degree in Indian music (M.Music). He is certified as qualified lecturer in music by the University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi. Shri Umashanker took to music at an early age and gave a full length concert at the age of 14. Since then, he had given concerts in leading music organizations, major festivals and famous temples within and outside the country.
