Navavarana Malika festival to begin on October 1
CHENNAI, September 27: The International Foundation for Carnatic Music (www.ifcm.ravikiranmusic.com) is planning to conduct the maiden Navavarana malika festival here. The two-day festival will begin on October 1. It will be held at Raga Sudha Hall, Mylapore.

The festival will focus on the contrasting styles in melody, rhythm and structure of these masterpieces composed by Muthuswamy Dikshitar (Kamalamba Navavaranams) and Oottukkadu Venkata Kavi (Kamakshi Navavaranams).

The Navavaranam set of compositions include the Ganesha stuti, Dhyana krti, the 9-avarana krtis and the phala stuti/mangala krti and are rich in esoteric details of tantric and mantric worship of Devi. They cover a range of core Carnatic and rare ragas such as Ghanta, Ahiri, Punnagavarali, Balahamsa, Deshakshi and complex talas such as Sankeerna Mathya, Khanda Dhruva and Khanda Triputa.

The festival will feature top artistes such as Trichur Ramachandran, Neyveli Santanagopalan, Jayalakshmi Santhanam, Suguna Varadachari, Gayathri Venkataraghavan, R. Suryaprakash as well as much sought after talents of the next generation such as Nisha Rajagopal, Vidya Kalyanaraman, K. Gayathri, Sriranjani Santanagopalan, Anahita & Apoorva and Pradeep Kumar.

Each artiste will render one krti each from the two composers' works in their respective order. During the evenings of the two-day festival, there will presentations on Dikshitar's Navavaranams by Sangeeta Kalanidhi Smt R. Vedavalli. Needamangalam Alamelu and Subburaman will expound the salient features of Venkata Kavi's Navavaranams.
