Padma Bhushan for Sudha Ragunathan, Padma Shri for Kanyakumari
CHENNAI, January 25: Senior Carnatic vocalist Sudha Ragunathan has been chosen for the prestigious Padma Bhushan award by the Central Government on the eve of the 66th Republic Day.
Violinist A. Kanyakumari has been chosen for the Padma Shri award.
Incidentally, both are disciples of late M.L. Vasanthakumari (MLV).
Sudha Ragunathan is already a recipient of Padma Shri. Only last year, Sudha Ragunthan was conferred the prestigious Sangita Kalanidhi title by The Music Academy.
An elated Sudha Raghunathan said that she would dedicate the award to her mother and teacher Choodamani, and gurus B.V. Raman, B.V. Lakshmanan and MLV amma.
For close to 13 years, Sudha Ragunathan had been under the tutelage of MLV. She had even accompanied her in many concerts.
Ms. Kanyakumari, a native of Andhra Pradesh, had her initial training under Ivaturi Vijayeswara Rao, before came under the tutelage of noted violinist M. Chandrasekaran. She became a student of MLV in 1971, and was with her for 19 years.
