When Chennai honours artistes...
CHENNAI, December 1: December is not just a season for enjoying unlimited music. It is also a much-awaited month for recognizing enduring works of classical artistes.

Music sabhas – the old, young and new ones alike – make it a point to fete artistes for their contributions to the world of classical music and dance. Honouring them with titles, awards and cash prizes has become an important constituent of their annual art festival in Chennai, which is considered the Mecca of Carnatic music.

This exercise is 'twice blessed". For, it blesses the artistes who are honoured. It gives them a sense of recognition. It also blesses the organisers and sabhas. For, they feel they too have done their own bit to promote and sustain classical art/music.

In a sense, this recognition of one’s achievement is an essential pre-requisite for fostering a healthy competition in any field.
