Efforts on to restore Dikshitar's house in Varanasi
CHENNAI, March 7: An effort is under way now to identify and restore the house where Muthuswamy Dikshitar, among the Trinity of Carnatic music, lived in Varanasi.

An indication in this regard has come by way of a tweet by the Defence Minister, Ms. Nirmala Seetharaman. The Defence Minister has, in fact, sought the help of the Tourism Minister of Uttar Pradesh to help in this mission.

"Thank you Hon.Minister Prof. Rita Bahuguna Joshi, a graceful host #UPInvestorsSummit. Thanks also for accepting my request to identify & restore in Kashi/Varanasi the house in which Shri Muthuswami Dikshitar, one of the Trimurti of Carnatic music, lived,'' tweeted Ms. Sitharaman.

Dishithar, it is believed, was presented a unique veena in Varanasi. One version is that the veena was presented to him by his guru Chidambaranatha Yogi. The samadhi of Chidambaranatha Yogi is still seen in Sri Chakra Lingeshwar temple at the Hanuman Ghat area in Varanasi.

Dikshithar lived for quite some time in Varanasi. The stay in the holy town reportedly helped Dikshitar to absorb the musical atmosphere there. Also, it gave him an insight into the Dhrupad technique, the songs of Sri Tulsi Ramayana and those of others such as Surdas and Meera.

Now that the Defence Minister has taken some personal interest in this matter, there is a ray of hope that the house where Dikshitar lived in Varanasi would be restored.
