A sincere work by Supriya
CHENNAI, November 19: Supriya Rajan presented a Mohiniyattam recital as a part of the Pushpanjali Trust series under the Mylapore Fine Arts banner on November 16, 2010. A student of Kalamandalam Kshemavathy, Supriya’s sincere effort came out vividly in her performance. She started with a chollukattu in ragam Chakravaham, choreographed by Kalamandalam Sathyabhama. She went on to do a padam, Swathi Tirunal’s composition `Poonthein Nermozhi' in ragam Ananda Bhairavi. Supriya played the part of the lamenting nayika quite well and her depiction of Padmanabha in all his glory was precise. Her main piece for the day, a varnam in Brindavana Saranga, was intense. It was essentially a portrayal of scenes between Kunti and Karna, Kunti’s distress and her need to express her situation to Karna, her “long lost” son, before the impending Mahayuddha.

She went on to the very beautiful Aahir Bhairavi padam, Pibarey Rama Rasam. Kaushik Bhargav on vocal did a tremendous job in this piece and the padam dripped with devotion for Lord Rama, leaving the audience to soak in the melody. She concluded with a Bhoopalam Thillana on Padmanabha, with intricate rhythmic patterns. It was quite a challenging one, considering that Mohiniyattam repertoire is usually slower in pace.

Supriya overall did a wonderful job, though her dainty form restricted her from having the stage presence that is ideal for a dancer. The orchestra did a good job, though the mridangist for the evening, Shri Kiran, had few problems. Reshmi Menon on Nattuvangam tried to take it forth smoothly though. Shri Sunil on the flute and Kalamandalam Suresh Kumar on the Edakka and Sadagopan on the violin did a good job.
