Pleasant Priya sisters make a mark
CHENNAI, December 20: The whether outside was inclement. The music inside the hall, however, was pleasant. Quality marked the concert of Priya siblings - Haripriya and Shanmukhapriya - for Brahma Gana Sabha on the evening of December 16, 2010. After a melodious alap in Ritigaula by Haripriya, the sisters glided into “Dvaithamu Sukhama” of Thyagaraja. Haripriya added flavour by sprinkling it with sparkling swaras. Papanasam Sivan’s “Maa Ramanan” (Hindolam) was pleasing. They excel in rendering the kritis of Thyagaraja and Annamacharya. Nevertheless, the Priya sisters make it a point to render a few nice Tamil kritis. A somewhat off colour Shanmukhapriya did an elaborate alap in Pantuvarali. Half way through this alap, Haripriya took over to weave some lilting sancharas. The profile of the raga came out clearly. “Appa Ramabhakthi”of Thyagaraja was a good selection. The neraval at “Kapivaridi Datuna Kaliki Rota Gattuna” was neat and attractive. The intermittent swaras added luster to the composition. “Edaiyya Gati”(Chala Natta) was rendered nicely. "Amma Amma Alamelumanga Nachiyar Amma”(Bhairavi) was sung by the artistes with so much enthusiasm. The main piece of the evening was “Dorakuna” (Bilahari). Haripriya’s alap was expansive. With her charming voice, she glided the octaves exquisitely. Violinist V.V.Srinivasa Rao played neatly. The neraval was done at “Rama Brahma Tanayudav”. Between them, they neatly constructed a stream of kalpanaswaras and beautified this long kriti. The Tani between mridangam artiste Delhi Sairam and B.Shree Sundarkumar on Kanjira was electrifying. Priya sisters sang a song on rasis (mesha, rishaba and others) - “Inni Rasula Yuniki Inti Cheluvapu Rasi” - on all nine planets. This one was lovely and enjoyable. This is a composition of Annamayya which describes the beauty of Goddess Alamelu Manga. Annamayya compares her grace to different rasis or the constellations. Bharathiyar’s “Kakaichiraginile” was sung with poise. The evening concert came to a conclusion with Lalgudi Jayaraman’s tillana in Rakesri.
