A traditionalists’ delight
CHENNAI, December 24: Priya sisters, Haripriya and Shanmukhapriya, gave an enchanting recital for Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha December 23, 2012. They were focused, and went about their concert in a devoted manner.

They picked some typically traditional numbers, and presented them in a copy-book style. “Ganamurthe” (Ganamurthy) of saint Thyagaraja was absorbing. Haripriya and Shanmukhapriya showed their mettle, as they explored the Vivadhi raga Ganamurthy with fineness. Their evocative articulation of the lyrics brought out the essence of the composition so very nicely. Clarity in diction was the hallmark of their music. Earlier in the beginning, the sisters rendered Dikshitar’s “Panchamatanga Ganapatina” (Malahari) with dedication. “Maalmaruga Shanmukha” (Vasanta) of Papanasam Sivan was very well portrayed. `Arivar yaar unnai’ (Mukhari) of Arunachala Kavi was soaked in bhakthi, as they rendered it melodiously. Haripriya’s expansive alap in Harikamboji brought to the fore the quintessence of the raga with grandeur. Thyagaraja’si “Entarani Tana” was a delightful. The neraval at “Seshudu Sivuniki Bhushudu Lakshmana” was sprinkled with easy-flowing swaras. “Guruvina Gulama” (Pantuvarali) of Purandaradasa was a likable piece.

RTP (Ragam, Tanam and Pallavi) was chosen craftily with Gaurimanohari as the main raga. The Pallavi was “Gaurimanohari Karunai Puri Kazhal Paninthen Dinam Dinam Maravamal”, which was set to Misra Jati Triputa tala in Chatusra nadai. Haripriya and Shanmukhapriya alternatively sang swaras in Saraswathi Manohar,Ramamnohari and Devamanohari, respectively making the pallavi-singing a strikingly creative exercise. “Sri Krishna Chaitanya Srivatsa” provided a nice treat for the evening.

M.A.Krishnaswamy on violin gave enough support to the artistes. Taniavarthanam between mridangist Neyveli Skanda subramanian and Purushothaman on Kanjira was lively.
