An experimental music & a worthy Yatra by Bombay Jayashri, Abhishek Raghuram
CHENNAI: November 22: Bombay Jayashri and Abhishek Raghuram combined well to take the audience to a musical `Yatra' during their performance at The Hindu November Fest. Held at The Music Academy in Chennai on November 18, 2018, the joint rendition showcased different genres, unusual ragas, fresh compositions and a mix of lovely accompanying instruments. As they experimented with a new musical amalgam, there was enough for assorted audience. From melody to fast-paced numbers, there was plenty during their 120-minutes musical interlude, making the listening experience refreshingly different and yet delightful.

Ravichandra Kulur was on the flute, Murad Ali on Sarangi and Anantha R. Krishna on Mridangam and Tabla.

The accompanying artistes excelled both as a team and individuals to provide the two vocalists of eminence the right blend to make the evening concert an enjoyable one.

Chennai has long graduated into a cosmopolitan city what with diverse people from across the country making it their homes. Murad Ali was quite at ease. The fact that the strings of Sarangi set the tone for a show that quenched the musical thirst of the mixed-language audience gives a clue or two to the changing profile of population in the city of Chennai.

Shuddha Sarang in Sarnagi strings set the stage for a scintillating Subramania Bharati song ``Valli in enda neramum nin maiya''. This was followed by a Marathi hymn. The duo then ventured into Padams in typical Carnatic style ragas. Abhishek was like as though he was in the crease with a senior playing test cricket! A lot controlled, he played a perfect foil for Bombay Jayashri, who was innovative and in control of the course of the concert till the end. The convergence in terms of musical conversation and shruti alignment between the two vocalists was the stand-out feature on this evening. The duo gave Bhagyada Lakshmi Baramma, a classical number, a whole new transformation. It took a different colour, shape and style in a new Nand raga. This evoked a mixed feeling. There was a piece on the Goddess of Veena. A tillana interspersed with Krishna nee Begana was followed by Vande Mataram to bring the curtain down on the evening concert.

Flautist Ravichandra Kulur certainly made his presence felt as he was delightful and sprinkled his music with the right mix of moods. Anantha Krishna showcased his multi-talent, and the Sarangi artiste must have felt a lot at ease! Praveen D Rao on the Keyboard/Harmonium played an inclusive part. The felicity with which he merged into the scheme of thought gave the concert an added edge.

It was a worthy experiment and a good off-season experience, at that.
