The secret of RaGa
CHENNAI: The RaGA sisters, Ranjani and Gayatri, are iconic for their youthful energy. And, they rub it off on the audience in full measure. On a wintry Sunday (i.e. December 23, 2018), the duo gave a scintillating recital for a full-house audience at Narada Gana Sabha. Varali, Kharaharapriya and Begada revealed their class. Their kalpanaswaras were a treat for the audience. The RTP was in Maand. The Pallavi chosen was from a popular piece with little modification. It was set to Tisra Jathi Rupaka in Misra nadai and sung as “Aarumo Avaal Arumuganin Azhagai Parugaada”. It was impressive as they sprinkled it with kalpanaswaras in ragas such as Shanmukhapriya, Bagyashree, Asaveri etc. Their alap in Maand was mesmerizing. With captivating phrases, the siblings painted an aesthetic picture of the raga in full flow. Their rendering of Senchurutti kirtan “Pogamal Erupparo” and abhang “Maze Vittala(Peelu)” was melodious. Delhi Sairam on mridangam and K.V. Goplakrishnan on kanjira gave a skillful display of their percussion support. The violinist measured up to the vocalist-sisters, who are an accomplished violinists themselves.

The RaGa sisters were consistent in their performances through out the season. And, their ability to connect with the fans has won them quite an appreciation in the music world. And, it has been a steady climb for the duo who began as a violinist-duo very many summers ago. Today, they are a much sought after musicians and their fan constituency has expanded quite a bit. Their huge fan following is proving an inspiration for these sisters. Not surprisingly, the RaGa sisters have been adjudged the outstanding vocalists by The Music Academy for season 2018.
